Anchorage, this is one of those weekends that reminds me why I love this town. The Alaska Federation of Natives is celebrating its 60th annual convention downtown, which makes the Dena'ina Center the center of the Alaska universe for a few days: thousands of delegates, the biggest Native art fair of the year, and an entire city showing up for it. Add a top-shelf comedy night in Spenard, a free pumpkin party for the kids, a throwback benefit concert, and a Sunday feast in my favorite neighborhood, and there is no excuse to stay home. Here are my five picks.

Weekend at a Glance

Founding Partner

This week's Weekend Picks are brought to you by our Founding Partner, The Natural Pantry. They were the very first business to step up and back Mr Anchorage, and they have been feeding Anchorage's healthy appetites since 1976. If you have never wandered their aisles, consider this your sign.

Friday Night Laughs: Beth Stelling at the Bear Tooth

Friday, October 23 · Doors 6:30 PM, show 7:00 PM · Bear Tooth Theatrepub, 1230 W 27th Ave, Spenard · Tickets $30 to $50 · Ages 18+

The Bear Tooth's winter comedy series, Vitamin Come(D)y, kicks off with a genuine heavy hitter. Beth Stelling has a Netflix hour that topped best-of lists, a Conan O'Brien produced special for HBO Max, and writing credits on Rick and Morty and Good Boys. That is a lot of comedy resume for one Friday night in Spenard, and it comes with Bear Tooth pizza and a cold drink at your seat.

Mr Anchorage's Tip: These comedy nights fill up fast. Buy your tickets ahead, arrive at doors, and order dinner before the lights go down.

Saturday: AFN's 60th Convention, Final Day and the Customary Art Fair

Saturday, October 24 · Daytime · Dena'ina Civic and Convention Center, Downtown · Free and open to the public

Saturday is the final day of the 60th annual Alaska Federation of Natives convention, the largest gathering of Native peoples in the country, and the public is welcome on the floor. Running alongside it, the Alaska Native Customary Art Fair brings more than 170 Alaska Native artists selling their work directly to you: beadwork, carvings, jewelry, and pieces you will not find anywhere else. This year's convention theme is Rooted in Land and Tradition, Rising in Our Voices, with Dr. Rosita Worl as a keynote speaker.

One honest note: Quyana Night, the beloved traditional dance showcase, is sold out for both of its nights this year. If you are holding tickets, enjoy every minute. If you are not, the art fair and the convention floor are still the best free ticket in town this weekend.

Mr Anchorage's Tip: Buy art straight from the maker and ask about the piece. The story that comes with it is half the value, and Saturday is your last chance until next year.

Saturday Afternoon: Pumpkin Patch Party at 49th State Brewing

Saturday, October 24 · 12:00 to 4:00 PM · 49th State Brewing, 717 W 3rd Ave, Downtown · Free

Free family fun downtown: a petting zoo, kids' crafts, and local vendors wrapped around 49th State's Great Pumpkin Patch, with Wild Scoops ice cream in the mix. It is the easiest yes of the weekend if you have kids, and a fine excuse for a beer and a giant pretzel if you do not.

Mr Anchorage's Tip: The Great Pumpkin Patch itself runs daily through October 30, so if Saturday gets away from you, the pumpkins are not going anywhere.

Saturday Night: Y2K Night, the Heritage Center Benefit Concert

Saturday, October 24 · 6:00 to 11:00 PM · 609 F St, Downtown (the old Williwaw Social) · Early bird $70, general admission $85

The Alaska Native Heritage Center's third annual benefit concert throws it back to the year 2000. The Ying Yang Twins headline, alongside Alaska Native artists Brother Buffalo, C.L.A.N, and Notorious Cree, plus Inuk fire dancer Heather Werning and a Y2K best-dressed contest. Last year's show sold out, and the money supports the Heritage Center's cultural programs.

Mr Anchorage's Tip: Early bird pricing will not last. Dust off the frosted tips and the velour, because the best-dressed contest is real and somebody is winning it.

Sunday: Taste of Spenard, Indoors

Sunday, October 25 · 12:00 to 4:00 PM · The Nave Spenard, 3502 Spenard Rd · Admission has been free in past years

Taste of Spenard brings its food trucks and local vendors indoors for the first time, which is a very Anchorage solution to late-October weather. Graze your way through the best of the neighborhood in one warm room, and feel good doing it: a portion of the proceeds goes to YWCA Alaska.

Mr Anchorage's Tip: Come hungry and pace yourself. It is a marathon, not a sprint, and every truck deserves a shot.

Honorable Mentions

Two more worth your time. Anchorage Restaurant Week runs through October 29 at restaurants all over town, and it supports the Food Bank of Alaska. I spent Thursday inside their warehouse filming, and I can tell you dinner out this week does double duty. The guide: https://blog.foodbankofalaska.org/anchorage-restaurant-week-2026-guide

And if Saturday does not work for you, the AFN convention and the Customary Art Fair are also open on Friday, free to public observers all day.

Until next weekend…

That is the weekend, Anchorage: convention crowds, comedy, pumpkins, throwback jams, and a Spenard feast. If I missed your favorite, reply and tell me where you will be. I read every one. See you out there.

P.S. Know someone new to Anchorage? Forward this to them. It's free, it's local, and it beats asking the internet what's happening this weekend.
